FONTANA - Customers lose power after cable fire
A small fire at a Southern California Edison substation knocked out power to several thousand customers in Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga early Sunday morning.
San Bernardino County Fire dispatch received a call of a fire at the Mira Loma substation in the 14000 block of San Bernardino Avenue near Cherry Avenue at 5:30 a.m., said dispatch supervisor Tom Barnes.
About 21,700 Edison customers were without power after the fire erupted.
Firefighters had the blaze, which began in an underground vault, under control by 6:30 a.m., and most power to nearby residents was restored by 7:30 a.m., Barnes said.
By 10:30 a.m., all power was restored.
Southern California Edison spokeswoman Mashi Nyssen said the fire was caused by a cable failure.
